The Golden Compass and Home

I finished The Golden Compass yesterday on the train from work. Definitely a cliff hanger that forces me to read the next two books, big surprise there, but still a good one. I'm not going to give anything away, but the end is CRAZY. Blew my mind. There was a really cool part at the end where daemons and Dust are explained a bit through a re-writing of the Genesis story. Obviously a bit of a shady interpretation, but really cool take on what it means to be fallen. More to come on that later, but there will have to be a spoiler disclaimer.

Overall, I liked the book. As I said earlier, it's a fun story. Sure, it isn't true, but then again, when was a piece of fiction true. Sure, it doesn't portray the Gospel and the story of the Bible in much of an alagorical way like some Christian fiction does, but it does a great job of teaching courage, loyalty, and brining up topics of how the church has many times used its power in inappropriate ways. I'm looking forward to the next two, although I have heard that Pullman decides to use the catch of the first book to put forth some 'dogma' on how he hates the Church. Then again, his view of the Church as institution is much different from the Church that Jesus Christ has built through his life, death, and Spirit. But I digress....

I talked to my friend about the movie. Not looking forward to seeing how it completely mixes up the plot. REALLY looking forward to the bear fight. Long live King Iorek!!!!

I got home last night after driving through the worst fog EVER. It's good to be home, drinking beer with dad, eating cookies with mom, going to Brazenhead with the Dub-C gang, and relaxing. Peace...
